Standard Drug Testing in the Workplace
People who are seeking employment and those who are employed themselves are subjected to a drug test. Here are some things that you need to know about drug testing.
Companies conduct drug testing to job applicants. It can be a urine or saliva test. Other companies also do blood or hair drug testing. Your job application can be rejected if your drug test comes out positive. Drug testing can be conducted at the employer’s site or at a designated clinic.
Even if you are already employed, some employer still conduct random drug testing. Sometimes, if an employer suspects that employees are using drugs at work, they also subject them to drug testing. If there is a need for great safety in the workplace, then it is important to have employees free of drugs and so drug testing is conducted.
If drug testing is announced and your employer uses the cheap urine method, then it can only catch a minority of drug users. Urine drug test can easily be passed especially if you have taken the drug two to four days before the drug testing. Cannabis, however, is an exception since it takes up to 30 days for all traces of the drug to leave your urine.
Some drug testing uses the hair to detect drug use. These are more expensive than a urine test so if there is an incident of misconduct, then this is the most likely method to be used. Hair tests can give much more detail about the history of your drug use.
Drug tests are not all the same. If you compare drug tests, you will find some drug test more thorough than others. Usually, a 5-panel drug test is done in the workplace. Cannabis, cocaine, opiates, amphetamine, and PCP are the types of drugs being detected in the 5-panel type. 10-panel drug testing is also used in certain sectors. This 10-panel test picks up on all the 5 drugs mentioned above including barbiturates, propoxyphene, methaqualone, benzodiazepines, and methadone.
