5 Winning Tips for Neophyte Flag Football Quarterbacks

Played quarterback before but new to flag football? Perhaps you’ve been playing flag football for some time but you haven’t tried the quarterback position. These tips will help you start off on the right foot as a neophyte flag football quarterback:

Get a ball that’s designed for you.

Sounds easy, but not all the time. You won’t need those big leather bricks used in tackle football, so get a kind that makes you absolutely comfortable. You decide if you want leather or composite, college or high school size, etc. – just get the ball you want.

Have your own QB style rather than copying another’s.

There’s no shortage of plays out there for you to learn. Get a taste of them all! Some will be nice and some won’t. Flag football is unique. Trial and error is the best way to learn. Let yourself develop a style that is yours and yours alone and thrive in it. But definitely, you need to stay open to general lessons that others may have to offer.

Remember, this is not tackle football.

This is highly critical.

No one is going to hit you, stepping into a pass or disrupting a timing route with the press coverage. Otherwise, it will be a penalty (it should be) and you have a first down. Use that to your advantage in every way.

Own your situational football.

Most probably, there’s still a coach giving you instructions until now. But guess who’s your coach now. No one else but you. You are the captain of the field. You call your own plays and execute them. Learn what you have to call in and when. A 3rd and 5 play will be worlds away from a 3rd and 15. What’s your second down play call after getting 5 yards on the first? You have to know both the time and score too. It will become easier later on but in the beginning, you need to make the effort as with all kinds of successes in this world.

Play whenever you get the chance.

This may be self-explanatory. The more you play, the more chances you have of improving your game. As the old saying goes, practice makes perfect. You will find leagues and tournaments nearly every day of the week. You don’t have to go broke or break your marriage for this, but whenever you can play, do it. Just check out the calendar online and you will see what events are happening in your area.
